Muskegon State Park

Clearzoning is helping Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources Parks & Recreation Division (DNR-PRD) with the development of a General Management Plan (GMP) for Muskegon State Park.Muskegon_campgound

GMPs are long-range planning documents that depict a park’s importance in terms of natural resources, historic and cultural resources, recreational and educational opportunities, and economic value.  A key aspect of a GMP is the Management Zone Plan, which reflects the land preservation goals and recreation programming for different areas within each park. Management Zones are developed based upon input from DNR experts, key stakeholders and the community.

The development of the General Management Plan begins with the assembly of a Planning Team from various specialists within the DNR.  The Planning Team typically includes the Park Manager, Regional Planner, District Supervisor, Stewardship Unit staff, and the PRD Management Plan Administrator.  In addition, staff from all of the DNR Resource Division participates, including Law Enforcement, Wildlife, Fisheries, Forestry and Minerals Management.

The DNR held a Public Meeting to review and receive comment on the draft plan on Tuesday January 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Laketon Township Hall, 2635 W Giles Road in North Muskegon.  The comment period on the plan closed on Feb. 3, 2017.  

The DNR would like to thank all those who attended the Public Meeting and provided feedback on the plan.  The Planning Team is currently in the process of reviewing public input and considering adjustments to the draft plan.  The DNR anticipates finalization of the plan in the summer of this year.

  1. Sorry I missed the comment period but the park could use a bike/walking trail to connect the north end campsites with snug harbor. biking/walking along Scenic is dangerous. Maybe someday then the trail would connect up to Pioneer Park and Duck Lake state Park.

  2. There are rumors out there that the State will be purchasing or acquiring additional property adjacent to the cross country ski trails and that some property owners will be forced to sell to the state or have their property taken by imminent domain.

    Is this true?
